Vox vs Siri and Alexa: Desktop Agent vs Voice Assistant

·6 min read

Siri and Alexa are the voice assistants most people know. They're built into phones and smart speakers, and they work well for quick questions and smart-home control. But they were never designed for desktop productivity. Vox was.

Different goals

Siri and Alexa are consumer voice assistants — they play music, set timers, control lights, and answer trivia. Vox is a desktop AI agent — it writes emails, manages files, creates documents, runs code, and executes multi-step workflows on your computer.

Feature comparison

Siri / Alexa
  • Smart home control
  • Quick answers to questions
  • Set timers and reminders
  • Play music
  • Phone calls and texting
  • No desktop tool execution
  • No file management
  • No document creation
  • No email drafting
  • No code execution
Vox
  • AI-powered desktop agent
  • Deep research with web search
  • Background task processing
  • Voice-driven email (read, draft, send)
  • File search, move, organize
  • 47+ desktop tools (files, docs, code)
  • Create Word, PDF, PowerPoint docs
  • Run Python, shell scripts
  • Knowledge base with local indexing
  • Multi-step workflow chains

Voice quality

Both Siri and Vox use on-device wake word detection. But Vox's wake word (“Computer”) activates a full AI agent, not a limited command parser:

Computer, find the Q3 earnings report, update the revenue figure to $4.2M, and email it to the board.

Try that with Siri. It can't find files, edit documents, or send email attachments.

Context and memory

Siri / Alexa
  • Each command is independent
  • No conversation memory
  • Cannot reference previous commands
  • Basic user profile only
Vox
  • Continuous conversation (infinite context)
  • Remembers everything you've discussed
  • References previous tasks naturally
  • Learns your preferences over time
Note

Siri and Alexa are great at what they do — controlling smart homes and answering quick questions. Vox complements them by handling the productivity tasks they can't touch.

When to use which

  • Siri / Alexa: smart home, music, quick facts, phone calls
  • Vox: email, documents, file management, research, code, desktop automation

Vox isn't trying to replace Siri or Alexa. It fills the massive gap they leave in desktop productivity.
